Work at home scams have been growing over the last few years due to the economic hard times. More individuals nowadays are looking for a way to start a business from home and produce some extra revenue for and expenses or to cover job losses. The Federal Trade Commission has issued a bulletin where they are going to restrict and basically slap this type of scams.

The FTC’s tracking of work at home scams has shown an increase since 2006. The number of complaints filed in 2006 was more than 4000; this number grew to over 8000 in 2009. From 2009 to the beginning of 2012 I am sure these numbers have doubled again. This is due to the number of consumers seeking a true way to make extra income during the hard times over the past few years.

These new regulations will help protect consumers who do come across this work at home scams while looking for legitimate work from home jobs. This type of work at home companies will now be made to give specific information to the consumer so that they may evaluate the true and actual performance of the marketing claim.

What the FTC Rule Will Help With:

Here are some of the FTC’s rules that will guide all companies making these claims.

• The seller’s identification information will be made public.
• Whether the seller makes a claim about the purchasers likely earnings, (and, if the seller checks that “yes” box, the seller must provide information supporting any such claims)
• Whether the seller, its affiliates or key personnel have been involved in certain legal actions (and, if yes, a separate list of those actions)
• Whether the seller has a cancellation or refund policy (and, if yes, a separate document stating the material terms of such policies); and
• a list of persons who bought the business opportunity with in the previous three years.

The company will be required to supply information about any employee or consumer who is joined or participated in a work at home business for the previous three years. They will need to provide actual details about these individuals who have profited supposedly from this business opportunity. If there has ever been a claim by a consumer concerning fraud or legal action taken, it must be listed and supplied publicly.

These new guidelines are scheduled to take effect on March 1, 2012. The good part about this final rule is the added protection it will give to consumers from false promises for quick money. It is been too long in coming for many individuals who have lost cash investments and many hours of work for only pennies and return.

The well-publicized unethical sales pitch of working at home stuffing envelopes and home assemblies of different product with guaranteed cash results will be brought to toe the line. These type of sale pitches are well drawn out to pull in the unwary consumer who might be down on their luck and wishing to make a few extra dollars. They do work, the sales pitches are well-designed, but most are misleading as to the final results achievable.

Many of these scams and others are based on the idea of very little work with high levels of return in payments. This should be the first red flag to pop up with anyone is searching for work at home jobs. If there was any means whatsoever to get these easy returns with very little work who would want to sell it. It’s a commonsense scenario; if it’s too good to be true, run away fast.

Some of these scams also include mortgage relief, ID fraud, and fake lottery sweepstakes. They will basically ask you to set up a payment plan and give out your credit card information with promises of blue skies and good times after that. Always check with the Better Business Bureau or the FTC to see if complaints have been filed against any company offering these type claims or promises.

What To Watch For:

Anyone offering these work at home opportunities or their affiliates who have been found to be fraudulent will be listed by the FTC. Their actual earnings claimed compared to actual results from consumers will be compared and scrutinized. These results will be made public from the companies history for the past three years.

There are many opportunities to start a work at home business that are legal, honest, and forthcoming with true results. If you think that you believe an opportunity exists or you can make $300 to $500 in your first hours of work, then backup and think again. Unless you are a doctor, lawyer or a CEO of a major corporation you will not see this type are return for a few hours investment.

I’m not stating that there are not legitimate jobs stuffing envelopes or assembling crafts at home. The just follow the normal warnings and double check any offerings before you sign up or give money to anybody. This ruling by the FTC concerning work at home opportunities will be a great benefit for anyone who trying to start a small business from home.

By forcing these companies to display their actual results from other individuals who have signed up, it will put a damper on their get rich quick schemes. Don’t get distressed if you were hoping to make some needed extra income with a work at home business. There is never a once in a lifetime opportunity where if you do not pay today you will not get the opportunity tomorrow. It doesn’t take long and you will start seeing other people’s problems while deciding in the back of your mind a proper solution. This form of brainstorming will get your mind activated and eventually you’ll come up with an answer to your own problem.

Any time you’re having a problem like writers block or indecision on how to perform a task, it’s best to stop and reevaluate. Productivity usually suffers when you are feeling unworthy or incapable. Sometimes it’s best to ask a friend or family member what they think about your personal issue.

Some people like to write down every item that they believe is causing a work stoppage. Some people use sticky notes, and plaster their walls and work area with questions and possible ideas. Use whatever means seems proper to you and figure your way out of the difficulty.

Not all ideas are good ideas, some are just plain stupid! Always figure out a backup plan for a second path to take. Working at home does have one drawback; there is no one there to tell you what to do. You are the boss. You are the supervisor. You are the overseer. You are responsible for you.

Don’t always think about it as though you were doing something wrong, if you’re working on the problem, you are doing something right. Too often many individuals will hit a brick wall like writers block and just stop. Failure is easy, it doesn’t take much work, and you won’t have to worry about it anymore.

Success is hard, it takes much work, and you do need to worry about it to keep it going forward. Excelling at any tasks or any field of effort will leave behind it a trail of hit-and-miss ideas and many hours of work. No one gets it right the first time, or the second, and may be not the 25th. But they do learn, they do go forward, and they will succeed.

So what it all gets down to when you have a bout of indecision or writers block is this. Stop! Clear your mind and reevaluate the task before you. May be you will work again on this particular subject in an hour, or may be three days. But when you do start up again it will be with a fresh mind and possible solutions to the problem.

Here are a few questions you should ask yourself. What skills do your already have? What skills would you enjoy working at from your home? Are you interested in learning new skills and add to current skills you have now to expand that job?

If you are currently employed, would you be willing to start a new home based business in your free time? If you are unemployed, can you afford the time and cost to start your work from home job and wait for the first paycheck to come in?

Are you burned-out working at your current career? Would like to follow your favorite hobby as a home based dream job? Are you a crafts-person type who likes to work with your hands and produce sellable items?

Do some brainstorming; write a list of jobs you are interested in. Take each listing and break it into categories:

• Do I like doing this?
• Will I need more training?
• Will there be overhead cost?
• Will I need more tools of the trade?
• How long will it take to put it to action?
• Will I be able to expand my choice into similar markets?
• Will I be ready to put in the time and passion needed to succeed?

Anyone can succeed in a work at home business. Everyone can fail in a self-employed adventure. Some jobs will produce income quickly. Some will take time and effort to bring in the first paycheck. All of them take hard work and diligence.

What Work Can You Do From Your Home? :

The freedom to do whatever you want from your home might have some rules and regulations attached. Depending on where you live, there might be homeowner ordinances or city laws and zoning that will limit your home business.

Noise is a concern if you have neighbors nearby. If you will need to store supplies or work on equipment in your front yard it might draw in the city zoning officials with their rule books. Some cities and communities have rules on running a business from your home within limits.

Under normal conditions a general rule is, if no one sees it, no one will care. I would suggest you do the needed research so you’re for-warned. It would be shame to get a great idea going and then be shut down by a regulating agency.

So your $20 per hour job pays about $8.75 an hour. It also takes 50 hours a week out of your life. This is only an estimate and I suggest you do your own math for your particular situations and cost. There are added tax savings you can factor in by running a home based business. The tax subject is a learning curve and beyond the scope of this article. But there are ways to save extra money off the top of your home based office income.

Part-Time – Full-Time:

Starting out I would suggest everyone look at this as a part-time job. Even if you are unemployed now, I would still make sure you like your new-found home based job. Once you get some experience at working your chosen work from home business, then you can think about working it full-time.

I know of families that work their part-time home business and each member performs a specific task. The husband builds woodcraft projects and the wife Tole paints them. This allows each member to look at the work as part-time.

At times family members that live apart or may be a good-neighbor will get together and work on projects. Working with other people can help keep the rhythm going and allow for better production. Whatever you aim for don’t burn yourself out from overwork.

If you do wish to work full-time when starting, it’s best to have a budget reserve set aside. Start out easy and make sure that outlays towards your new home business are needed. There will be many opportunities to overspend in the hopes of expanding or creating more income. Thoroughly think it out before you spend.

Home Based Hobby or Small Business:

Roughly speaking I would think about a work at home job that make a few hundred dollars a month as a hobby. If you are working to make a couple of thousand dollars a month or more, it’s a small business. Depending on your income and the clients you do business with, a tax id number and may be business license might be needed.

How much space do you have at your home? Do you have a spare room or a corner of a room to setup your office desk and files? If you need to buy tools or equipment to get started do you have a nest egg or investment capitol? Your first paycheck might take some time to get. Take your time and complete the first start-up steps as you grow. Poor planning and having to redo or step backwards will cost and take twice the effort.

There are several forms of work at home jobs that only need the most basic of skills. Some do need a special expertise. If you’re planning to use your current knowledge and experiences, then put them to use at your home business, you are a step ahead.

Many jobs can start with a single skill set and expand or combine into others. Self-learning or training is a good idea, but it usually does not pay. Allow yourself the added time to learn and test new ideas or trades. The Internet offers a large collection of training and how to guidance free or little investment. But you will have to invest some of your time to learn it.
